RWE Battery Plant Secures Consent

  • In January 2025, Pembrokeshire County Council granted conditional approval for RWE’s 350 MW Battery Energy Storage System near Pembroke Power Station.
  • Construction is expected to commence in late 2025, aiming for operational status by early 2028.
  • 212 battery containers and 106 power conversion systems, the facility could store sufficient electricity to meet the average daily needs of over 72,000 typical UK homes.

RWE is advancing plans for a 350 MW battery energy storage system adjacent to Pembroke Power Station as part of its Pembroke Net Zero Centre (PNZC) initiative.

Battery energy storage is vital for integrating renewable sources like solar and wind into the power grid, storing excess energy for use during periods of low generation.

This technology enhances grid stability by responding swiftly to fluctuations in demand or generation, contributing to a more resilient energy system and bolstering the UK’s energy security during the transition to renewable energy.

Luciana Ciubotariu, CEO of the Celtic Freeport, commented: “The Pembroke Battery project supports the ambitions of the Celtic Freeport by enhancing Wales’ capacity for low carbon energy storage and innovation. RWE continues to strengthen the region’s role in renewable energy, contributing to a cleaner, more resilient power grid for future generations.”
